  • When you receive your comfrey roots or crowns plant them as soon as possible! We ship them wrapped in damp shredded paper and sealed in plastic bags to keep them fresh and ready to plant. Open bag upon arrival and If you can not plant in a permanent location right away, plant temporally in pots or buckets until you can.


    Root cuttings are 2 to 4 inches long and about as thick as a pencil and thicker.  These can be planted in spring summer and early fall and can take up to 8 weeks to sprout. Plant cuttings horizontally about 1 to 2 inches deep. Cuttings planted in late fall can overwinter and sprout in spring. Cuttings are your best option to grow many plants affordably.


    Crowns are the part of the plant when divided, and will usually have green sprouts out of the top. The green sprouts may die when planted but will grow back quickly. Plant crowns up to the base of the growing green sprouts that are growing out of the crown base, These are the best option if you are looking to have your comfrey produce usable leaves as soon as possible. You can plant these spring summer and fall.
