Q & A – What Do You Use For A Safe Organic Weed Killer?

Today’s question comes from Randy. He asks “What are you using for weed and grass killer since you don’t use any harmful chemicals in your yard?” Great question.

.

First I would like the explain why I don’t use products like Roundup or other similar products. Check out the information from this link  http://www.motherearthnews.com/nature-and-environment/roundup-weed-killer-zmaz09djzraw.aspx

.

So what do I use as a weed and grass killer?

This is a mixture I seen many times on the internet, it has slight variations depending on where you read it at but this is what I have found to work well for a couple years now.

1 gallon White Vinegar

1 cup Epsom Salt

1/2 cup Dawn Dish Soap

Mix together and put in a sprayer.  Apply late morning after the morning dew has dried up and no rain in the forecast for a day or two. That’s it, not complicated at all.

.

The next question should be “How well does it work?”  Really good, very fast, but not as long lasting as a commercial weed and grass killer. I apply every couple weeks and nothing grows in those areas. However if I wait too long to reapply the weeds will come right back. For me this not a problem because it’s very inexpensive (about $2.50 a gallon) and the areas I use it on takes a little less than a gallon and it only takes about 15 minutes to apply.
